Worst Storm in 20, Maybe 50 Years

December 22, 2008 Leave a comment

I’m sure you’ve all seen it on the news or are experiencing it yourself, but thought I would throw in a few words and pictures of our storm.  I am really missing the winery.  I got kind of use to going there every day, opening, hoping for customers, improvising lunch with RJ,  and getting product priced and organized.  But even if we could make it (which we can’t at this point), there would be no point.  No one in the right mind would be wine tasting in weather like this (unless it was hot-spiced wine in front of a fire place).  Now we sit at home.  Fortunately, a winery neighbor is checking on the place to make sure it stays warm.  I am wrapping gifts, organizing things and doing a little sewing.  I made 17 catnip toys.  My sister said I must be bored.  Not really, I just have not sewed and crafted in so long (or is it “sew long” :)) that it was quite fun.  While organizing my craft book library, I found a number of unfinished crafts waiting to be finished.  So here are some pictures of our storm, beautiful, isn’t it.

We’re Approved, Legal, and Hopefully Open

We got our final county inspection yesterday and we were approved, so we can open our doors and advertise.  Unfortunately, the weather isn’t being cooperative.  It got alittle bit better today but is supposed to get cold again tonight.  If we can, we will have the winery open.  It is toasty warm inside because of the pellet stove and heaters.  I got one of the pairs of shoes from Keen today and I love them.  They are so comfortable; will be perfect for the winery.

It’s Very Cold

I promised you pictures of our winter winery so I’m including those.  I’m also including the frozen fountain and the lastest custom gift basket.  RJ left the heaters on in the tasting room last night because we had frozen pipes yesterday and last night was colder.  Hopefully, no damage up there.  But we have a frozen pipe here at home so we have no water, which means no shower for me because I waited too long.  It is pretty and eerily quiet outside.

Winter Weather

The snow storm that had been predicited did hit us beginning mid-morning yesterday.  We went up the winery anyway.  I was saying the whole way, “I don’t know why we are doing this.  We won’t be getting any customers.”  I was wrong.  We had 3 customers, all buyers.  We had our first “non-friend” “return/repeat” customer.  That doesn’t sound right, but you know what I mean; lots of friends have been repeat customers.  They bought wine for Christmas, and  I sold a custom basket to a friend.  Then we had visitors from Colorado, including Mark who works for Keen shoe company.  He comes to Oregon often, but his girlfriend  had never been.    Before their visit was over, he ordered 3 pairs of shoes for me to be comfortable while working in the tasting room.  I can’t wait to get them, because shoes and feet have been a problem lately.  I even wore my penguin slippers yesterday up there, which may be what led Mark to order me shoes; who knows.  Here’s a link to his company’s web site  I’ve also added it to my permanent links; the least I can do.  When RJ gets home (if he gets home; our road is a sheet of ice), I’ll have pictures of the show and our frozen fountain.

Okay, it’s not just me

A customer today said, “We have the warmest tasting room [she’s] ever been to.” We get comments like that all the time. They love colors and the bar stools, the special touches like the fountain, the sink and Ghost, and the gift items. Yes, I’m bragging, trying to get you to stop by.

A Bed for Ghost

So we bought a dog bed for Ghost to help in the transition of bringing him home at night. I think he likes it. What do you think?

Ghost Is Ours

Did I mention that Ghost, the yellow (almost white lab) is ours?  During the Thanksgiving rush, our renters came by and called RJ out of the room to tell us they were giving notice and moving out.  They wanted to know if we would keep Ghost.  Of course we said yes.  We still don’t know what we are going to do with him in the evening with our 3 cats, but we’ll work it out.  I think he is okay with it.  What do you think?

The Gift Shop

I promised pictures of the gift shop, so here they are.  I’m also including a picture of our first customer for Thanksgiving weekend.  I have been making up wine baskets for instant gifts and have been taking orders on the same.  They start at $20 and can be as elaborate as you want.  I’ve included a picture of one I just finished.

Power Outage

Yesterday, we had our biggest sale yet; two cases to one person, yeah!!!! We also had a 2-hour power outage. I had to do things the old fashion way with calculator, paper and credit card slips. So much for my $3000 POS system. It was a good day though all-in-all. More pictures of the gift shop soon.

Thanksgiving Weekend

December 6, 2008 Leave a comment

Okay, okay, I know you’re dying to hear how our Thanksgiving Weekend (our first official opening) turned out.   Now, that it’s over and I can take a breath, I can tell you that it turned out great!  We were very nervous on Thursday and Friday morning because we had no idea, so we got there early and everything was ready for our first customer who showed up 15 minutes before we were open.   We were packed the better part of our open hours on Friday and Saturday and had a steady flow on Sunday.  We had over 500 people.  The comments were very favorable.  Our sales were alittle less than I expected but I had nothing to base that on.  Our gift shop sales were good, so that seems to be a hit.  Of course, the biggest hit was the wine fountain in front and the glass sink.  Why did we bother painting the walls :).  Here are pictures of the people, etc., for you to enjoy.
