So Far This Week

October 30, 2008 Leave a comment

We have not gotten any painting done, but we put in insulation and worked on the bar.  RJ put drywall in the kitchen preparing the the counter top.  The countertop was installed yesterday and is beautiful.  RJ says “It’s okay, not wow,” typical male. The floor guy is coming in today with a new machine to take up the paper in the backroom.  The contractors have been in to do the drywall and mudding.  The plumbing “Rough” inspection is done and approved.  The electricians came in yesterday to fix the 3 things that came up in their inspection.  They did a really funky thing with the waterheater cord.  Can’t figure that one at all.  A friend, Ken, came and replaced alot of the bad brick in the back.  We wanted to retain the rustic look, while repairing lose and missing bricks and it looks terrific.  We hope to paint this weekend.

Underwear? and Church Activities? and Heart Problems? What?

This week, we executed our Bi-Annual Octoberfest Dinner.  RJ and I made the sausage and I coordinated the dinner and related activities.  Included in the dinner was a silent auction and quilt raffle.  Our friends, Henry and Joyce, were our guests and won the quilt raffle and several auction items.  I’ve included a picture so you can see what they look like when they’re not working hard at our winery.   I’ve also included a couple of pictures of the dinner.  Please note the table cloths; I whipped them out Thursday afternoon (14 in total) for this dinner.  We also had some progress at the winery.  Henry finished putting the fountain together and the rock around it.  Joyce did some gardening and helped me put insulation in the kitchen and bathroom so sheetrock could be put.  I hate fiberglass insulation.  I also worked on the bar and some cleaning.  So what about the Heart?  On Thursday, RJ was feeling rotten and very lithargic.  His blood pressure was low and he has all the symptoms he had back in 1994 when he had a heart attack.  On Friday afternoon, while I was at the church, he checked himself into emergency.  They did tests and could not conclude one way or the other.  He has more tests this week.  What a pickle I will be in if he can’t do any work for six months…or worse.  He does feel better today and alot is happening at the winery so let’s cross our fingers.  And there is a picture of my underwear drawer.  Why would I show you a picture of my underwear drawer?  Because normally it is crammed full.  I have enough for nearly a month, but I am so far behind on laundry (and everything else) that this is what we are living with.  At least, I still have a sense of humor :).

Getting Closer

I can’t believe it’s been a week since I’ve updated the blog.  Last week we had very little (none) contractor activity so we did the things we could do.  I finished sanding the bar and stained the new piece.  I also bought tile for the rest of the flooring including the back room.  RJ has been working on repairs to the sink cupboards since the counter will be in next Tuesday (28th).  Joyce worked on painting the new pieces in the kitchen and sanding the backroom.  Henry cultivated the vineyard getting it ready for seeding between the rows.  Keep in mind I have also had to organize our church’s Octoberfest dinner coming up this Saturday, including a silent auction.  On Sunday, I got a surprise.  Some friend’s from California and their relatives in Corvallis were coming in a half hour.  I had them scheduled for next week.  So we did the tour thing and dinner on Sunday, and then I put the two friends from California to work on Monday.  Our biggest project was pulling up the carpet in the back room.  We found there was very old linoleum underneath.  That was very hard to get up.  Took us better part of the day.  Back room is ready to paint and almost ready to tile.  I have also been working with a bunch of publications on ads and press releases.  Joyce is helping me put together a mailing list.  Lastly, I negotiated with our POS vendor to get some funding.  It would be here in 2 weeks or so.  Today, we are scheduled for final inspections on electrical and plumbing.  Cross your fingers.  Pictures include kitchen cabinet work, pulling up carpet and flooring, bar and whateven else I feel like including. 🙂

Decisions, decisions, decisions

So many decisions to make with the winery.  This week, we picked out tile for the floor and the counter was modeled for the acrylic counter top.  RJ has been working on the counter top in between harvest.  He is still working at Kramer’s tonight and it is 7:30 p.m.  He was at the winery at 8:00 to meet the counter top guy.  He is going to be a tired puppy.  He has done such a great job on the corner of the bar top and the missing piece.  It all just fits right in.  He also did some repairs to the kitchen cabinets in preparation for the counter.  But I don’t have pictures because he has the camera.  They will follow soon.  I am working on my Press Release for our opening.  I spent 2 hours on a conference call about out-of-state shipping.  There are so many processes and costs involved.  Don’t expect out-of-state shipping too soon.

Broken Glass

I broke my first Plum Hill wine glass today.  Bummer!  But I know it is one of many.  You see, we have no water supply and no dishwasher, so when we eat at the winery (which we do almost every Sunday evening and most Saturday evenings; come on by), I have to take the dishes home in a box.  When I was packing up the clean dishes, I almost dropped a plate and it hit a wine glass.  I have lots of pictures.  We ordered our LG acrylic counter top on Friday and they told us to take the plywood top off the counter, so I did that.  So we have open drawers and cupboards now.  RJ has been working on patching the bar top and adding the missing piece.  We got a quote of $975 to do that project and we spent about $100 on the black walnut and cherry and RJ is doing it himself.  Joyce painted the inside of the barn and took down all the shelves in the backroom.  Henry has been diligently taking out fences and spraying blackberries and he made grates for all the slots in the manure (soon to be grape must) separator.  I have started sanding the bar top to refinish it in a semi-gloss as opposed to glossy finish.  I ordered our POS system today.  Am very excited about that.  It will be my new toy.  Am in the process of ordering shirts with our logo.  Our opening is 46 days away.

Progress and more progress

I’ve been chewed out for not updating his regularly and too few pictures, so here it is.  The problem is that the work that is being done is hard to see in pictures and some of it is more demo than building.  Anyway…The plumbing and electrical are almost done.  We had our electrical inspection on Monday and they found 3 things, one which could be a big deal.  The funny one is we have to have a line within 15 feet of the building for a lighted sign.  We don’t have to have the sign, but we have to have the line.  Plumbing inspection is supposed to happen today.  We picked up light fixtures and looked at counter tops on Tuesday.  I love the Corian product in sage green and white but whew! expensive.  Hopefully, we can go with it since we don’t have that much counter to do.  Afterall, I saved alot of money redoing the cupboards myself.  Sheetrock is going up, so we should be able to paint next week.  Then you see some pictures.  Speaking of which, I have 17 pages done in the scrapbook.  RJ has been finishing up the bar, adding the end piece and patching the corner.  I get to sand and finish now.  I have also selected a Point of Sale (POS).  I know it is overkill for our size but it will help me keep track of inventory and speed up the ringing of sales.  Oh yeah, and how could I forget, we harvested this week.  A much smaller harvest than last year, but beautiful grapes, no mildew whatsoever.  Pictures below.

Things Are Moving Now

The tasting room building is buzzing with activity.  The plumbers, electricians and general contractors have all been in this week and RJ has been picking up the pieces behind them by putting in switchplates, door knobs, etc.  The plumbing is nearly done with pipe to the sinks and toilets and utility room.  There are still lots of holes in the concrete, however.  The electricians have put in many of the outlets and new lights.  The general contractor has put in sheetrock on one side of all the walls and put up a new door in the back.  Our dishwasher and some of the racks have been delivered.  We also received the faucet for the bathroom sink.  It is awesome.  Wait until you see it.  Joyce worked on touch-up and finishing paint last weekend, including finishing the built-in cabinet.  Henry and RJ did alot of clean-up in the fields.  I was able to get rid of our refrigerator in the chicken coup and get $30 for it from recycle.  Funny story; there were post-it notes on it with grocery lists.  I hope the previous owner didn’t run out of “Kool-aid.”  Things are really taking shape.  We got rid of the rest of the bins in the calf barn; sold most and gave some away.  I’ve been evaluating Point of Sale systems and man are they expensive.  We did another wine pouring in downtown Forest Grove to advertise our opening in November.  I’ve included pictures of our “old” refrigerator, the “empty” barn and the walls.
